Does magnesium oil actually absorb through your skin?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Honestly? It's debated. A handful of small studies hint that some magnesium can cross the skin, but bigger reviews aren't convinced it raises your overall magnesium in a meaningful way. Lots of people still like using it — the honest position is to enjoy it without assuming it replaces oral magnesium.

Why the idea is appealing

Transdermal magnesium — absorbing it through the skin — is an attractive pitch: you skip the gut entirely, which means no tablets to remember and none of the loose-stool effect that higher-dose oral magnesium can cause. Spray it on, the story goes, and it soaks straight in. It's a lovely idea. The question is whether it actually works that way.

What the research found

  • A few small studies — foot soaks and sprays — have reported modest rises in magnesium markers, but they were small, often not well-controlled, and easy to over-interpret.
  • Your skin is a genuinely good barrier, and magnesium is a charged ion, which is exactly the kind of thing skin is built to keep out.
  • Larger reviews of the topic have concluded the evidence for meaningful transdermal absorption is weak, and that better studies are needed before anyone can claim it reliably tops up your magnesium.

So why do people say it helps?

Because they often feel something — more relaxed muscles, an easier wind-down before bed. That's real, but it's hard to know how much is the magnesium and how much is the act of massaging a limb, the warmth, the few quiet minutes, and plain placebo. All of those genuinely help you relax; none of them require the magnesium to have crossed the skin.

The honest takeaway

Magnesium oil is cheap, low-risk and pleasant, and if you enjoy how it feels there's every reason to keep using it. What we won't do is promise it's a proven way to fix a magnesium deficiency — the absorption science simply isn't there yet. If you think you're actually low in magnesium, that's a conversation with your GP, and oral magnesium (or diet) is the better-evidenced route.
